I worked nearly a whole summer to get this shot. In those days I didn’t set things up, so I drove past this tree at every chance. Eventually this guy was finishing mowing the yard and made my day. It was my first front-page, all editions, freelance feature photo for the Courier Journal.

Interestingly, later that summer while photographing a billboard worker elsewhere, I found some of my work--this photograph--as trash all around the site.

For the first time I realized that in this business, one day you're front page news, the next-- you're cluttering the landscape.
